The Weld Community Foundation awarded more than 150 scholarships totaling $750,000 to local students at its annual Scholarship Reception. It was the 19th year that the event was sponsored by FNBO. Since 1997, $5.4 million has been awarded in scholarships thanks to the generosity of donors to Weld County students.

Angelica Orozco was the first guest speaker at the event. The 2019 Eaton High School graduate is now a first-generation college graduate. Angelica graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs in May 2023. During her college career, she was a volunteer tutor for Children’s literacy center, an Officer for Beth-El’s Student Nurse’s Association, a certified pediatric phlebotomist, a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and a very stressed nursing student! After passing her licensing exam this past summer, Angelica will serve as a pediatric nurse at a children’s hospital ranked among the top 10 in the nation. Angelica is the 2019 recipient of the Leoma Hunter Scholarship and multi-year recipient of the Sharon Magnuson Farr Scholarship!
Kristi Thomas, Vice President of Ace Hardware of Greeley with locations in the Bittersweet Shopping Plaza and University Square, was the second guest speaker at the Reception. Kristi has served on the Women’s Fund of Weld County in various roles including President. She is currently serving as President of the Greeley Family House and as Secretary to the Weld Community Foundation where she is in her 6th and final year. Kristi spoke about the time spent reading over all the scholarship applications and how special this time truly is for her (820 minutes, if she averages out the minutes per application!). She acknowledged the difficulty of designating awards after encountering all the stories from such hard-working students.
